West Wind is a 232 acre farm in the center of the Shenandoah Valley, about half way between Staunton and Lexington, Virginia. The Middlebrook area is gently rolling, well watered land distinguished by magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and Great North Mountain to the west. Large cattle and crop farms predominate as well as horse farms enjoying two local hunt clubs and the Virginia Horse Center.
Driving through West Wind’s woods, you arrive at cleared land at the top of the ridge and approach the house. This is a two-story five bay brick house with a standing seam copper roof surmounted by a gallery with turned balusters. The main block has hyphens and gabled wings on each end.
The front raised panel walnut door is flanked by ionic columns surmounted by a leaded glass transom and a dentiled cornice with carved dogwood flowers. Segmental arches, decorative brickwork, and inset arches on the corbelled chimneys also contribute to the façade.
The central hall with herringbone walnut floor and open string staircase extends 42 feet from the front door to the glass doors at the other end, opening on a brick terrace. Like the adjoining living room, and the three master suites, the hall enjoys a magnificent panorama of most of West Wind’s 232 acres and of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Arched doors lead to the cherry wood library, dining room, and 42×17 living room.
Ogee crown moldings, molded chair rails and Federal style mantels with fluted pilasters and sunburst friezes distinguish many rooms. A large kitchen, with custom cabinets and Corian counters connects to a family room with a high, cove molded ceiling and brick fireplace.
All in all, there are two master bedroom suites on the first floor, a very spacious well lighted master suite with fireplace and panoramic view on the second floor, and three more bedrooms and two more baths on the second floor, and a seventh bedroom/office with bath in the basement. An indoor swimming pool adjoins the basement. A three-story elevator leads from the two-car garage in the basement up to the kitchen and thence to the top floor.
There is over 8,000 finished square feet and about 4,000 square feet unfinished. A geothermal system provides exceptionally economical heating and cooling. With underground utilities, no above ground wires spoil the views of this and neighboring properties.
